FREAKY FRIDAY: An Interview with Kaleb Morgan of Macabre Media Podcast

By Jordan Gerdes

I met Kaleb through a random conversation on Twitter, I think about The House That Jack Built, and over the last few months have come to hold him as a very good friend, as well as our first guest contributor on the site. He runs an awesome podcast, writes crazy analytical papers about horror movies (wait until I post his essay om Antichrist), and has a very creative approach to his facet of the horror community. Starting Friday (TODAY), he is debuting his Horror on High series where he gets stoned and watches a horror movie. I for one am very excited to see this, and it ought to be hilarious. He is a college student in Colorado, has great taste in the genre, and it’s time for you to know him! Without further ado, here is Kaleb Morgan.

FOF: First and foremost, tell us about yourself.

My name is Kaleb, I’m an evolutionary biology major and I live in Colorado because I like weed.

FoF: What do you do? And why do you like it?

Shit, I primarily run a podcast, I stream horror games and sometimes I will write a review but my eggs really lie in the podcast basket.

FoF: Explain a little bit of your process? Where do you find your inspiration?

So depending on what it is, it’s a different process. For all reviews, I experience the work first, whatever the fuck that means. I play the board game or watch the movie or play the video game then I scour IMDB and the internet for information on it and throw it all on a Google Doc and compile a “script” or in some cases an interview and then I just record it on Audacity and put it into Libsyn.

FoF: What drew you to horror in the first place?

Well my parents, specifically my dad, were into it and it would slip into my life at times, like my dad playing Resident Evil or my mom watching Ghost Hunters. Then I saw Blair Witch Project and boom bada bing I fell in love with the sensation of being scared.

FoF: What is your favorite horror work?

My favorite horror work is a tough one. I love the Friday the 13th franchise, but this new wave of discomforting, grieving, horrendous gritty films are really getting it for me.

FoF: What has been your favorite thing you have gotten to work on doing this?

Honestly, the amount of dope ass movies I have seen and the people I have met are the best. I have made so many cool supportive friends in this community!

FoF: What role do you think your specific style of art/work plays in the community overall?

I am one of probably over a hundred horror podcasts, and one with no distinctive qualities outside of myself. The role I play is a fan and an active twitter user, that’s it! I’m alright with that.

FoF: Anything you are working on that you want to highlight?

Listen to the show, I’m on twitch if you look up Macabremediapodcast but otherwise check out the horror community, especially on Twitter, it’s a dope friendly group of people. Especially the people who inspired the show, Frigay the 13th and The Final Boys.

I have a merch store on TeePublic! I don’t get squat for it so wait for a sale but I love the idea of people supporting the show in that way. The link is
